• How much does a Wheelchair lift cost?

• What funding and grants are available?

  From care level 1, the long-term care fund can pay up to €4,180 per person in need of care if the Wheelchair lift makes home care easier or enables more independence. If several eligible people live together, up to €16,720 per measure is possible. In addition, the KfW grant 455-B for barrier reduction has been available again since 2026: for individual measures up to 10% of the eligible costs, maximum €2,500. Alternatively or additionally, the KfW loan 159 of up to €50,000 per residential unit is available. Important: applications must be submitted before signing the contract and before installation.

• Platform lift or vertical platform lift – which is better?

  A platform lift makes sense if a wheelchair has to travel along an existing staircase and there is enough stair width. A vertical platform lift is usually better if only a few steps or a short height difference have to be bridged vertically. The vertical platform lift needs a footprint but keeps the staircase clear. For several floors, or when comfort and a cabin matter, a home lift can be the more suitable solution.

• How much space does a Wheelchair lift need?

  A Wheelchair lift needs space for the wheelchair, safe access and manoeuvring. For barrier-free planning, a 150 x 150 cm manoeuvring area is an important guide value; clear passages should ideally reach 90 cm. Platform lifts additionally need stair width and a parking position, vertical platform lifts a level footprint in front of and behind the platform. In existing buildings, the aim is usually the safest and most practical solution within the available dimensions.

  Yes. Outdoor solutions are common at the front door, to the terrace, to the garden or at the cellar entrance. Slip-resistant platforms, corrosion-protected components, weatherproof controls, drainage and sufficient lighting are important. Outdoors it should also be clarified whether a foundation, railings, weather protection or permits are needed. The measure can be eligible for funding if it reduces barriers in the living environment.

• How safe is a Wheelchair lift?

  A Wheelchair lift should be safely operable without outside help. Standard features are hold-to-run control, emergency stop, anti-roll protection, safety bars or doors, obstacle sensors, smooth starting and emergency lowering or a battery solution in the event of a power cut. With platform and vertical platform lifts it is also important that entry and exit are level, slip-resistant and easily accessible. Safety comes from technology, planning and regular maintenance together.
