Making a Cost-Effective Decision
There are plenty of like-new stairlift models available, but it may surprise potential customers to learn that many suppliers, as well as market leader Lifta, sell used and refurbished lifts through its subsidiary “Der Treppenlift”. An option that can be significantly cheaper.
In general, used and refurbished stairlifts are sold with a new stair rail and have many features of new models. Features such as remote control operation, a comfortable padded seat and backrest, safety sensors and directional switches may also come with a second hand stairlift. For people with limited incomes, this option is by far the most economical. Used and refurbished stairlifts typically cost one-third the cost of a new lift. It is advisable to check with the manufacturer or lift consultant if the reconditioned stairlifts have a one-year warranty. A maintenance technician should call at least once a year to perform safety inspections and perform routine maintenance.
All stairlifts, old or new, require the rails to be adjusted for each installation. Keep in mind that the resale value of the lift is a secondary consideration if a curved stair rail is required, although manufacturing costs are higher here. Very few houses and staircases have identical dimensions and stairlift rails for curved staircases are invariably custom made.
Is it advisable to buy used stair lifts?
Stairlifts are usually very solidly constructed. As a result, they have quite a long service life. The purchase of a used seat lift can therefore really be worthwhile. Of course, this is especially true if it is a lift from a reputable manufacturer that may have only been in use for a short time. Even in such cases, savings of up to 50 percent are quite possible. The most favorable is the purchase of a used seat lift from private, for example, via the online auction house eBay.

Thus, the purchase prices from private are sometimes 70 percent below the new prices. Costs for disassembly, testing, adjustments, replacement of wear parts and the renewed assembly are, however, still added. Since you usually always have to rely on a fitter from the trade, you should have these costs calculated exactly and include them in the calculation.
Private individuals vs. commercial dealers
There are specialist dealers who have specialized in the trade with used seat lifts. Buying from such a specialized dealer offers several advantages. The stairlifts are inspected, refurbished and come with a warranty. However, the possible savings are far from being as great as when buying from private individuals. There, however, the risks and possible follow-up costs are far greater.
One should consider namely in each case that the assembly of a stair lift should be left to specialists. This is the only way to ensure that the seat lift is absolutely safe to use. The decision to purchase a used and refurbished lift should therefore ideally be made together with a specialist dealer or fitter. This can install the stairlift afterwards and take care of service and maintenance in the further course.

How expensive is a used seat lift?
A blanket statement about the cost of a used stairlift is difficult to make, regardless of whether the lift is purchased privately or from a dealer. Prices for new seat lifts start at around 3,500 to 4,000 €. However, in this price range you can only get lifts for straight stairs. Lifts for stairs that have a curved path are significantly more expensive and quickly cost over 10,000 €. When buying used, savings of around 50 percent are possible – but usually only for straight stairs.

In curved staircases, namely, even used stairlifts usually require adjustments that drive up the price. When buying from private, another saving is possible. Higher follow-up costs, because of additional maintenance work – and often also the dismantling in another staircase – come however sometimes in addition. It is therefore sensible, even when buying used to compare several offers and providers with each other to determine the best price.
Are used stairlifts safe?
In principle, stairlifts are so solidly constructed that buying them used can be worthwhile. Nevertheless, certain safety-relevant components must be subjected to close inspection and wear parts replaced. These service works are tasks for a specialized dealer or fitter. This ensures that the use of the seat lift does not involve any risks.
As important as the inspection of the used lift is the professional installation. More for the comfort or feel-good factor, it may be advisable to replace certain parts (handles, seat cushions, etc.) as they age over their useful life. As a rule, specialist dealers who sell used seat lifts always carry out such an overhaul before the sale. Whether and to what extent adjustments should be made to the staircase to ensure the safety of the stairlift should also be discussed with a specialist consultant.
Industry experts advise against buying used stairlifts older than 18 months. These lifts can no longer be assured that wear and tear will not affect overall performance. However, all manufacturers and suppliers have lift experts on hand who can provide detailed advice on the best options.
How to find the right stairlift?
The four established manufacturers of new stairlifts operating in Germany are Lifta, Acorn, ThyssenKrupp and Hiro Lift. All produce excellent, robust and reliable products. The overall price of a used and refurbished stairlift depends on the number of features it has. For example, some lifts have a specially designed “seat” for people who cannot bend very far when sitting. It should also be noted that for taller and heavier people, stairlifts with a higher maximum weight must be purchased.

Here we sell an almost new stairlift of the well-known brand ThyssenKrupp, model “Levant Comfort Plus” – complete with all accessories (folding rail, 2 remote controls, operating instructions, etc.) and of course the original invoice, because the entire system still has warranty! The new price of the entire system was just over € 7,000 last year. The lift was installed in January 2013 in the house of my parents, but actually only used for 4 months, because my father, for whom it was purchased, has since passed away.
The lift is installed on the left side of a straight, 6-step staircase. The length of the rail is 1.75 m and is supplemented by a 0.55 m long fold-out part, which is operated fully automatically electrically. The total length of the rail is therefore 2.30 m. The seat also rotates fully automatically and has safety armrests and a seat belt; a footrest is also provided, of course.
A standard power outlet is all that is needed to operate the lift; all functions can be operated either from the control panel in the left armrest or from one of the two remote controls, which are housed in wall brackets at the beginning and end of the staircase and can be removed.
When the lift is not in use, the seat, armrests and footrest can be folded up to save space.

I sell a M 64 outdoor lift straight to 5 m from Proflex. The outdoor lift was mounted on 30.10.2012 and has a warranty of 2 years. He is hardly used. Therefore, it is like new. The outdoor stairlift (fully galvanized) of model 64 from Proflex is a battery-powered outdoor lift with up to 5 meters of rail (aluminum rail). The motange is made on left hand. I offer my seat lift from 2009 from Freelift for sale on negotiation basis. The lift is the model K450, it is lockable, has 2 remote controls and a new price of about 9500 EUR. The length of the rails is 4.70 meters. The lift has been serviced exclusively by a specialized company. Traces of use are present on the chair housing and on the rail. However, the functionality is present without any problems. In addition, the running rail includes three stopping points with charging contacts. Each of the stations are located at the end of the track and slightly above the second curve. The removal can be done by the buyer and should be done after 01/15/2014, until then I still need it myself. The teppenhaus height is 2840 mm and the step height is 190 mm. The seat lift was installed in 2008 and properly maintained annually by ThyssenKrupp. The original price was 15,000 EUR. Unfortunately, the stairlift was never used, as its use was denied.
