Lifters allow people with mobility impairments a safe form of mobility. They can be used in the bathroom, for example, making it easier to get into the bathtub or go to the toilet. However, lifts can also enable transfer from a wheelchair to a bed or an armchair. Lifters with rail systems or walking lifts even allow transport from room to room.
Lifts help people with limited mobility to get up, sit down and transfer. They can be used throughout the house. However, they are especially common in the bathroom and bedroom. Lifts can be used autonomously or can also facilitate the work of caregivers. They make a significant contribution to increasing safety by minimizing the risk of falls and injuries.
Hazards in the home
Falls when standing up, sitting down or moving can have dire consequences. For people with limited mobility, many tasks of daily living are therefore associated with a risk. A particularly large number of accidents occur in the bathroom, for example when getting into or out of the bathtub. Lifts can help minimize these risks. They help their users stand up, sit down and transfer, thus enabling a safe form of mobility.
Lifts have been used in the rehabilitation and care sector for some time now. They support the work of nursing staff there. Increasingly, however, the focus is also shifting to the home. Some lifts can be used on their own, without the need for a caregiver. But even if sole use is ruled out for personal reasons, lifts have a purpose in the home. They make care easier for family members and ensure maximum safety.
Various lifter shapes
Lifters come in a wide variety of forms. There are fixed lifts that are mounted on walls or ceilings. Also available are mobile lifts or stand-up lifts. They do not have to be permanently mounted, but take up more space. It is possible to combine a lift with a rail system. In such a case, the lift allows a person to be transported from room to room. This transport may also be possible with a walker lift.
Overhead lifts can also perform the functions of a stair lift and can therefore be used to overcome differences in height. They can be used both by people who are dependent on a wheelchair and by those who do not need a wheelchair. Active lifts are equipped with a drive that assists in raising the patient and, if necessary, facilitates transportation. Passive lifters primarily provide a support and guide function.
Mounting lifts
Some lifts must be permanently mounted. These are primarily ceiling or wall lifts. The mounting makes them very stable and convenient to use. However, whether they can be mounted on the ceiling or in the wall is a question of load-bearing capacity. But even if the masonry does not have the required load-bearing capacity, lifters can be mounted permanently. There are solutions where beams are mounted from wall to wall or solutions where a complete stud frame is used.
Stand lifts or mobile lifts, on the other hand, do not need to be permanently mounted at all. They can therefore be flexibly transported from one room to another. There are also collapsible aids that can be easily transported in a car. Such lifts can then be used on vacation, for example. Because they do not require assembly, stand-up lifts and mobile lifts are also usually cheaper than wall or ceiling lifts.
Advantages and disadvantages of permanently installed lifts
Fixed lifts are particularly stable and convenient. They allow for swiveling, ensuring safe transfer. Overhead lifts can be flexibly extended by a rail system. By allowing movement from room to room, they offer broader utility than other systems. Even without rail systems, they can be used in multiple rooms. In most cases, the lift can be transported separately. In the individual rooms, only the corresponding bracket is then required, but not the complete lift in each case.
The disadvantage is the large assembly requirement. This increases the cost of the lift. How expensive a wall or ceiling lift actually is always depends on the individual requirements profile. Simple lifters are already available from around 5,000 €. However, more complex ceiling lift systems sometimes cost well over 10,000 €. Permanently installed lifts are therefore significantly more expensive than floor lifts or mobile lifts. They are already available for under 1,000 €.
Buy or rent a used lift
Money can be saved by buying a used lift. This is particularly suitable for stand lifts or mobile lifts, as these are not permanently mounted. One can save in such a way up to 50 per cent. If the lift is only needed for a limited period of time, renting a lift may also be an option. For ceiling or wall lifts, this option is not normally available. If you decide to buy a used wall or ceiling lift, you should include the costs for adjustment and assembly in the purchase price.
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, I am looking for a possibility for a rehabilitant to overcome 4 stairs outside, (still wheelchair user) in Memmingen. On the one hand, it is probably temporary, on the other hand, it would be in the context of a work trial. (Accessibility of the workplace). What are the alternatives to a tubular steel ramp (cost about 6000€)? Many thanks and best regards
